ACT for OCD: Doing Compulsions Mindfully in Session

Kate-Morrison

Independent practice, Kate Morrison LLC, Sandy, Utah

Key Points

  1. Explain the autopilot and manual override modes to the client before introducing the practice.
  2. Emphasize that, to disrupt any patterns we have for ourselves, we’ve first got to be aware that they’re happening while they’re happening.
  3. Make the client pause while they’re doing their compulsions, to help them analyze their experience.
  4. Guide the exercise so the clients have enough practice, but don’t push them beyond their willingness levels.
