Key Points

  1. Mindfulness is defined as paying attention with intention to the present moment without reacting to judgment.
  2. DBT mindfulness skills can be grouped into the “what” skills of observe, describe, and participate, and the “how” skills of one-mindfulness, nonjudgmental stance, and effectiveness.
  3. Useful mindfulness exercises in DBT for depression are the “starting over” exercise, the tracking card, behavioral chain analysis, nonjudgmental stance, and the ”modern art“ exercise.

Definition of Mindfulness

As noted, you can order skills modules in whichever way best meets a client’s needs, but bear in mind that mindfulness is a core DBT skill. Jackie hadn’t encountered mindfulness before, so her work within this module began with a lot of psychoeducation.

The definition of mindfulness in use here is similar to that of Jon Kabat-Zinn: paying attention with intention to the present moment without reacting to judgment. Jackie learned that mindfulness is about building awareness into her thinking, and emotional and behavioral patterns. She grew to acknowledge that her mind was often focused on planning for the future or on past failures rather than the here and now, the moment she has influence over.
