Key Points

  1. The interpersonal effectiveness module features the skills FAST, DEAR MAN, and GIVE, to increase self-respect, establish boundaries, and foster supportive relationships.
  2. The stick-to-values skill from FAST is helpful in managing suicidal ideations and urges to engage in self-injury.
  3. The values card score lets clients see how behaviors do or do not align with their values, reducing negative self-judgments and increasing self-respect in a number of ways.

The final DBT module is interpersonal effectiveness. These skills are immensely beneficial for building and managing supportive relationships, increasing self-respect, establishing and maintaining boundaries, practicing assertiveness, and making needs known to others. While this can be the messiest and most challenging module, it can also be the most rewarding.

An important principle to impart to clients is that rarely will its skills (FAST, the self-respect skill; DEAR MAN, the assertiveness skill; and GIVE, the skill for building and maintaining relationships) be practiced on their own. More often than not, it’s effective to dialectically balance skills depending on circumstances, relationships, and values.
