DBT for Depression: The Case of Jackie

Dennis-Hannon

Center for Psychological Growth and Resilience, LLC

Key Points

  1. Jackie is a 56-year-old, single, Caucasian, heterosexual, cisgender female who presents to therapy with depression. She is employed well, and owns her home, though is unable to spend much time there.
  2. She started suffering from painful knee issues in her fifties, greatly affecting her well-being. She had an alcohol use disorder, but accessed 12-step groups and individual therapy and has been sober for 10 years. She takes antidepressant medication.
  3. Jackie’s close relationships had already been few before issues with physical and mental health reduced them further. She feels isolated and has no one in her life outside of the therapy space with whom she feels she can share those difficulties.

Introduction

Dr. Dennis Hannon is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he runs his own practice called the Center for Psychological Growth and Resilience. He uses evidence-based practices in individual and group therapy settings to help clients living with depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, stress, chronic pain, and other chronic medical issues. He has facilitated dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups and used DBT in individual therapy for over a decade, and here shares this accrued body of knowledge.

The concepts and coping skills of DBT for clients living with depression are explicated through a case study involving Dr. Hannon’s former client “Jackie”. Elements of her story have been adapted, amplified, or modified to protect her identity, and to illuminate certain aspects of DBT for the purposes of clinical education. The goal is for you to attain practical techniques to use with your own clients to help them manage their depression.
