What Is DBT?

Key Points

  1. DBT combines behavior therapy with philosophies of dialectics, mindfulness, and Buddhism to increase an individual’s ability to regulate emotions and inhibit impulses.
  2. DBT has four skills modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These can be addressed through group and individual therapy, as well as phone coaching.
  3. Treatment goals and skills acquisition follow the DBT hierarchy: suicidal and life-threatening behaviours, therapy-interfering behaviors, and quality of life issues.

Treatment Formulation

With a diagnostic and clinical conceptualization of Jackie’s situation in hand, we can turn our attention toward identifying ways to support her, and others living with depression, through DBT. But before getting into specific interventions, a brief introduction is in order.

Introduction to DBT

Dialectical behavior therapy was developed by Marsha Linehan in the 1980s and 1990s to support individuals living with borderline personality disorder, including those with chronic suicidality, and engagement in parasuicidal behaviors like self-cutting or -burning. It has been adapted to treat other populations and disorders, such as those living with depression.
