ACT Processes: Values and Motivators

Diana-Hill

Private Practice, Santa Barbara

Key Points

  1. Values are qualities of action which are consistent with the type of person a client wants to be in the world.
  2. It’s essential to talk about what matters most to the client in the session.
  3. Values are intrinsic motivators, which stimulate people to take action independently from other people or external factors.

Working With Values

The second process, that of values, is also often worked on early in therapy. People have different ideas about what values are or aren’t, but in ACT we think of values as being verbs and adverbs, qualities of action that feel consistent with the type of person you want to be.

A value may be something like adventurous, creative, courageous, or humorous. It’s less important to identify specific value words with clients, and more important to have conversations about what matters to them.
