Acceptance Practices and Binge Eating

Diana-Hill

Private Practice, Santa Barbara

Key Points

  1. With a client with binge eating, work with them on accepting the feeling of being full, allowing it to be there without restricting food intake, and not acting on the craving to compensate for their fullness.
  2. Creative hopelessness addresses how the behaviors of trying to control thoughts and feelings actually make things worse.
  3. Help your clients practice acceptance with their behavior because one of the best ways to change your mind is to change your behavior around something.

Notice Inside

Noticing by imagining is a good practice to try with clients. In this case, you’d have the client imagine that he sat down and is about to study. So in his mind, he’s sitting at his desk, at his computer, with all of his study materials.

What does he notice happening inside of his body? Where does he notice it? What are the sensations in there? If he were to draw around the parts of his body where he experienced the most intense sensations, where would that be? What color, texture, and temperature?
