DBT Assumptions
When orienting a client such as Lisa to DBT, the therapist isn’t simply presenting agreements and commitments. They adopt a specific attitude and set of beliefs known as DBT assumptions. These are not exclusive to DBT but are essential for its practitioners. The beliefs help the clinician to remain effective, particularly during challenging sessions, and are frequently discussed during therapist peer consultations. No matter the data observed during a session, the therapist retains the following assumptions.
