Mindfulness Skills for Trauma and PTSD: Body Scan, Mindfulness of the Five Senses, Breathing, and Enjoyable Activities

Key Points

  1. Mindfulness is simple observation and acceptance of the present moment.
  2. A body scan is a good place to start. In this exercise, you ask the client to do a quick check-in with their physical body and just notice what’s going on. In the mindfulness of the five senses exercise, the client brainstorms a list of stimuli, one for each sense, which will be used to practice mindfulness.
  3. Mindful breathing is about noticing how the body breathes naturally, without trying to control it. Mindfulness can also be practiced with enjoyable activities. The client makes a list of things they like that can be done daily, and practices mindfulness while doing them.

Mindfulness is usually a good place to begin. It is foundational to DBT, so a client really needs to develop a basic grounding in mindfulness through simple exercises, in and out of session.

Body Scan

The body scan exercise involves learning to do a quick check-in with the physical body, just noticing what’s going on. Maria can do this in session and also on her own.

She noticed some tension in her neck and shoulders and tightness in her chest. She also felt a knot in her abdomen and a mild foot tremor. The aim is simply to notice such things, but it also provides good information to use when doing trauma processing later on.
