Key Points

  1. There is a high likelihood that Jane will still have some anxiety about specific environmental cues. However, there will be a significant improvement in her ability to respond flexibly to it.
  2. It is helpful to apply defusion exercises at the end of treatment to show that anxiety might not disappear completely, and that this is normal and manageable.
  3. Regarding Jane’s prognosis, there will be an improvement in her relationships, more engagement in leisure activities, a better work-life balance, and greater life satisfaction.

Predictions

Following treatment, Jane’s prognosis can be estimated as follows:

  • A high likelihood of some ongoing anxious sensations and worry thoughts, especially in response to certain cues like times of transition, unexpected changes, new activities, performance reviews, and being given undesirable feedback.
  • Significant improvement in Jane’s ability to respond flexibly to future anxious thoughts and feelings. Rather than hopping on the worry train and taking a trip, she may notice the initial thought, see it as a worry, and let it be background noise. This will mean significantly less functional impairment as a result of any further anxiety.
