Meet Your Instructor: John Robert Wagner, Ph.D., R.Psych.

Dr. John R. Wagner is a registered psychologist in British Columbia, Canada. He is director of the DBT Centre of Vancouver, a clinical associate at Simon Fraser University, and an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He has served as associate director of the Psychology Clinic at UBC, and taught graduate-level courses on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) at the University of Washington (UW) and UBC.
Dr. Wagner received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Toledo in Ohio. Prior to enrolling in the doctoral program, he worked for two years as a research assistant at the New York Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in New York City. At the University of Toledo, he received training in a variety of evidence-based treatments for children, adolescents, and adults.
He developed his interest in DBT during his pre-doctoral internship at Tualatin Valley Centers in Portland, Oregon. He completed a joint two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UW with Dr. Marsha Linehan, the founder of DBT, and with the DBT Center of Seattle. During this fellowship, he received intensive training and supervision in DBT and other evidence-based treatments. He was trained as a DBT adherence coder for Dr. Linehan’s research studies at UW, and is certified as a DBT clinician by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification.
Dr. Wagner provides psychological services to both adolescent and adult clients and has led adolescent and adult DBT skills groups for over 20 years. He has provided workshops across Canada, and frequently consults with mental health providers in working with people struggling with complex multi-systemic disorders.
