Dialectical behavior therapy was developed by Marsha Linehan in the 1980s and 1990s to support individuals living with borderline personality disorder, including those with chronic suicidality, and engagement in parasuicidal behaviors like self-cutting or -burning. It has been adapted to treat other populations and disorders, such as those living with depression.
