How to Set Treatment Targets and Goals in ACT for OCD

Kate-Morrison

Independent practice, Kate Morrison LLC, Sandy, Utah

Key Points

  1. Set treatment targets from a collaborative stance with the clients, addressing safety concerns first when needed, but focusing on the areas which impact the client most.
  2. Treatment goals have to be concrete, specific, and measurable. They don’t have to focus solely on decreasing symptoms, but should also aim at increasing enjoyable behaviors.
  3. In order to decide when to end treatment, look at the behavioral goals and objective measurements, and consult with the client as to whether they feel ready to conclude.

Treatment Targets and Goals

Jazmin: What is the first treatment focus you address with Anne?

Dr. Morrison: I would approach this in a very collaborative way with her. However, if there are risk-related concerns, I will target that first, even if that’s not the step she’s ready to do. But because we don’t hear that with her right now, I’d want to talk with her first about the area she would like to start. For example, “What makes the most impact on you at this moment?”

We want to get that momentum as quickly as we can in treatment. I would go with that first if it’s the most important thing for Anne, even if it’s not the easiest spot to start. You want to let her guide what’s going to be the treatment target. So I would leave that decision to her. Letting her husband watch her child, or reducing the amount of checking she’s doing at night and getting some more sleep.
