  2. Mark’s goals included boosting self-confidence, reducing approval-seeking, improving responsiveness to Lisa’s needs, exploring career dissatisfaction, addressing family influences, and establishing boundaries with his mother.
  3. Lisa’s goals included managing anxiety, addressing body image and aging concerns, improving assertiveness and open communication, and evaluating the impact of her career on the marriage.

Individual Goals

Dr. Squyres Groubert worked on individual goals while working with the couple. Some therapists will refer a client out; they won’t work with either individual while working with the couple. However, this therapist’s approach is that everything she and the individuals do together is for their benefit, and helps the couple grow stronger and more emotionally connected. It also helps each partner feel like they’re heard and their concerns are addressed on a regular basis.

She will sometimes set the goal of working on an individual issue with the partner present. For example, when discussing Lisa’s body image issues, Mark was able to hear what she was talking about. The specific focus of that session was work with Lisa, not the couple. The same dynamic applied to addressing Mark’s issues and relationship with his mother. This allowed each partner to understand where the other was coming from in greater depth and with more sensitivity. Dr. Squyres Groubert finds that model to work very well.
