Agent of Change
The last process for discussion is committed action. This focuses on moving toward a values-based life, taking steps away from a stuck place and into a life worth living, by the client’s own definition. One fundamental assumption here is that change is really hard. It’s difficult to bring about change for human beings generally.
The most impactful agent of change for Charles is for him to go out and have different experiences in social settings. We can do lots of talking about things, and all the meditation and other exercises in and out of session, which are valuable and have their place. But ultimately what’s going to have the greatest effect is for Charles to go out into the world and have some success in social situations. Success isn’t the absence of anxiety or shame. It’s simply that he does it, and hopefully has experiences of greater connection, his ultimate motivation for taking those risks.
