ACT for OCD: Assessment, Symptoms, and Onset

Kate-Morrison

Independent practice, Kate Morrison LLC, Sandy, Utah

Key Points

  1. You can use assessment scales before, during, and after treatment to measure progress. The instruments used in this clinical case were the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Patient Health Questionnaire section 9 (PHQ-9, which addresses depressive symptoms), and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire second version (AAQ-2).
  2. During the intake process, it’s important to gather enough information to differentiate OCD from other conditions. However, the therapist doesn’t have to collect the complete symptomatology in the first session.
  3. ACT has a transdiagnostic approach, so it addresses different types of symptoms during the treatment.

Assessment Scales

Jazmin: You administered three scales, the Y-BOCS or Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the PHQ-9 or Patient Health Questionnaire section 9 that addresses depressive symptoms, and the AAQ-2, which is the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire second version. When did you administer them, in the first contact before starting the treatment or in the first therapy session?

Dr. Morrison: I provide the questionnaires before having my first appointment with a client. You’ll be taking some guesses of the required questionnaires based on the information gathered when they scheduled the appointment. For Anne, this was provided before the intake so I can look through those questionnaires before we meet, and then we might have other assessments as the treatment goes on.
