Anxiety Disorders

In this clinical case, Michelle Woidneck, Ph.D., provides a process-focused ACT perspective for understanding and treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

She employs the hexaflex model in addition to useful metaphors and tools while developing an ACT-guided diagnosis and treatment structure.

Dr. Jessica Borushok presents the clinical case of Sarah, a 25-year-old woman with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Adopting an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) conceptualization, the therapist seeks to help Sarah develop self-confidence and flexible action guided by values.

The treatment plan includes psychoeducation, acceptance, and cognitive defusion techniques, as well as interoceptive and in vivo exposure exercises.

Meet Your Instructors

Dr. Daniel J. Moran is the founder of the MidAmerican Psychological Institute, founder of Pickslyde Consulting, and past president of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. He received an Outstanding Mentor Award from the Association for Behavior Analysis International. 
Dr. Moran coauthored a case conceptualization manual for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and several publications applying ACT to clinical issues, leadership, and behavioral health. He has appeared on The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, and The Oprah Winfrey Network discussing anxiety disorders, and is a recognized ACT trainer and board-certified Behavior Analyst.

Michelle Woidneck, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Omaha, Nebraska. She earned her doctorate in combined clinical/counseling/school psychology from Utah State University in 2013. She completed her doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health. 

Before entering private practice she was a staff psychologist for several years at the Center, where she helped to start the Trauma Recovery Clinic and co-developed an adolescent dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) program. Dr. Woidneck Kieffe provides individual and family therapy for adults and adolescents with diverse clinical presentations, and is a peer-reviewed acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) trainer. 

Her clinical and research interests fall within the areas of acceptance- and mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral interventions, ACT, DBT, trauma and posttraumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder and related conditions, and evidence-based practice.

Dr. Jessica Borushok, Ph.D., C.Psych. (she/her), is a clinical psychologist in private practice specializing in anxiety disorders and health-related concerns, including insomnia, chronic pain, and coping with chronic medical conditions. In addition to clinical work, Jessica provides Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training and consultation to other mental health professionals. 
Dr. Borushok is the co-author of numerous books, including the award-winning introduction to ACT book, The ACT Approach. In an effort to bring evidence-based resources to the public, Jessica also runs a Youtube channel called The ACT Therapist.
Dr. Brian Pilecki is a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of such anxiety disorders as OCD, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorder, in addition to trauma and PTSD, and matters related to the use of psychedelics. 
Dr. Pilecki completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and practices from an orientation based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). He also has extensive experience in the areas of mindfulness and meditation, and incorporates them into his therapeutic approach to clients. He is an active researcher and has published on topics including anxiety disorders, mindfulness, psychedelics, and the relationship between theory and practice in psychotherapy.

Kate Morrison, Ph.D., is a psychologist specializing in the treatment of OCD, anxiety, and related concerns. Her career has focused on the research, training, and application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and exposure therapies for these concerns. 
Dr. Morrison is the owner of a telehealth clinical practice focused on these themes in Sandy, Utah. She has been practicing and studying ACT and clinical behavior analysis for well over a decade. 
Dr. Morrison has authored numerous articles and book chapters related to ACT, OCD, exposure therapy, and OC-related disorders. In addition to her clinical practice, she serves on the editorial board of the and trains other professionals in her areas of expertise.
Christine Runyan, Ph.D., is a clinical health psychologist, co-founder of Tend Health, and a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. After starting her career as a psychologist in the US Air Force, she focused her research, clinical service, and teaching on behavioral science in family medicine, as well as promoting models of integrated primary care.
 
Dr. Runyan is also a mindfulness teacher at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness.
