Adherence Dynamics: The DBT Pros and Cons Grid

I wanted to go over a pros and cons grid that I did at a conference, and to share with you a real-world example of, “What are professionals and clients saying are reasons to follow or not follow professional advice or engagement plans?”

Adherence Dynamics: The DBT Pros and Cons Grid

So let me set the stage. I’m working on a whiteboard in front of probably about 15 to 20 professionals who are nurses, doctors, care managers, case managers for chronically ill individuals. And we also had probably 15 or 20 individuals with chronic illness, which ranged from chronic pain to cancer survivors. We engaged in a pros and cons grid about compliance, treatment adherence, or just following professional advice.

Adherence Dynamics: The DBT Pros and Cons Grid

As we transitioned in language we had clients talking in language of compliance and professionals talking about adherence. It was interesting as they toggled back and forth. So we’re in a language change time right now, as we’re moving more toward adherence. But oftentimes, depending on who you’re working with, you’ll see that terminology shifting back and forth.
