What Is the Cycle of Change?

So one model that I like to teach to clinicians and clients alike is the cycle of change.

What Is the Cycle of Change?

One thing that I encourage you to do is have a running example, whether this is in group or in individual therapy. I have a fictional person in my life that I made up. Now, I don’t necessarily tell my clients that this person is fictional, but I use them in a way to make a point, and I don’t want to go too far in personal disclosure where somebody else’s therapy becomes about my issue.

What Is the Cycle of Change?

So I talk about my Uncle Gary. And my Uncle Gary can be very challenging because he’s very critical, he can be interruptive, he throws out a lot of hurtful comments at times. For anybody that works with me for a while, they get to know my Uncle Gary. And why do I pick Uncle Gary? Because he has characteristics that a lot of clients can relate to, because they have their own Uncle Gary or somebody else in their life that has characteristics that are challenging. And that’s the concept.
