Mental Health Systems, PC
Key Points
Starting clients off with DBT basics provides a foundation of understanding and skills.
Increases the probability of clients being effective and promotes sustainable change in their lives.
There’s more than one way to teach skills. Make them alive and interactive.
A “right” way to conduct therapy is about effectiveness.
Find ways for our clients to understand what we’re teaching and apply it to their lives.
Teach through contextual learning.
Present the material with real-life examples and use reflective communication.
Ensure that clients have understood what we’ve talked about.
Clinicians aren’t the experts in the room; the client is the expert.
Consult the client on their experience, what they’re doing, and how they’re doing it.
Engage clients when talking about change and teaching skills, and involve them in different forms of communication.
We’re working with clients, not trying to do therapy to them.
