Key Points

  • Focus on the first two weeks when initially talking to clients.
  • Talk about stages of change, how to prepare for it, and risk vs reward.
  • From two weeks to one month, review the plan.
  • Get a commitment to the risk of doing something new.
  • Motivation is the key because people get bored and beaten down.
  • One to three months is about the creation of a habit, when it gets reinforced or dissolves.
  • Initially focus clients on the first three months.
  • Expect this approach to be new to most people, even if they’ve been in DBT for a long time.

The Seven-Step Method: Timeline for Change

So our timeline: zero to two weeks, two weeks to one month, one to three months, three to six months, six to nine months, and then our next bracket is nine to 12 months and beyond.

The Seven-Step Method: Timeline for Change

When we’re talking about a change timeline, I want to focus for the first zero to two weeks, when we’re initially talking to clients. They’re talking about a desire for change. We’re going to talk about stages of change, how to prepare for it, about risk vs reward, which again is probably one of the most important things you can talk to them on.
