The next concept that we’re going to talk about is foundational skills training. And when we’re talking about change and sustainable change models, this is something that clinicians across the country and internationally have said: whatever training you do, make sure you’re training clinicians on this.
So I get asked by my own clinicians, “How do I know when I’m doing my job?” I’m like, wow, that’s a really interesting question. Let’s unpack that a bit, but most of the time what it comes down to is, what do I do and when do I do it? How do I do it? And one of the things that I’ve been teaching for years and years with clinicians, and our clients have related to this extremely well, is the concept of TAG. Everyone loves an acronym because you can remember it.
Carlson, M. R. (2017). CBT for psychological well-being in cancer: A skills training manual integrating DBT, ACT, behavioral activation and motivational interviewing. John Wiley & Sons Ltd.,Carlson, M. R. (2014). CBT for chronic pain and psychological well-being: A skills training manual integrating DBT, ACT, behavioral activation and motivational interviewing. John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
And clients love it because they’re like, “Oh, I play tag. I get it. It’s give and take and it takes time. It’s a game. It’s fun.” And I’m like, “Yes, therapy can be all of those things. I love it. Thank you for the validation.” From our clinicians, what they really like is, it gives them a frame of reference about, “What do I do and when?”
